March - June 2015
So after only about 4 months at the Great Falls Tribune, my "Digital Content Editor" position was eliminated. I was charged with training the features editor on how to manage the newspaper's website and social media channels, and how to monitor analytics - and then offered a conciliatory position as a staff photographer. Lacking any other options at the time, I accepted.
I'm not going to lie - the role change (and resulting pay cut) sucked a whole bunch. But I think I made the most of it.
Despite graduating with a degree in Photojournalism, up until that point I had never actually worked as strictly a photojournalist - I always had additional multimedia responsibilities that kind of shoved photography onto the backburner.
So during the four months it took me to find a new job, I threw myself into the role of "Photo Girl," and actually really enjoyed the challenge and variety of it. During an average workday, I would be assigned as many as 3-5 small shoots or 1-2 that I could linger on and dig my teeth into. All in all, I'm pretty proud of the portfolio of work that I produced during this time period and grateful for the opportunity to grow my skills.
